An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Tuesday, repeating indefinitely


Group description

A weekly gathering of job seekers designed to provide support, information, new ideas, and resources to those coping with unemployment (or underemployment). Topics addressed in group are based on input from group members. Common topics include: networking, interviewing, self-awareness, effective communication, generating job leads, and other job search concerns.

Who should attend?

Unemployed and underemployed professionals in the Madison area.

Group format

The format of group varies but often includes check ins, small- and/or large-group discussions, occasional guest speakers, and opportunities to practice job search skills.


  • Emotional support—The job search can take a toll on you. The Job Search Support Group is a source of support from fellow job seekers as well as a professional counselor.
  • Expand your network—You’ve probably heard that networking is critical to your job search. Attending group will help you connect with people and increase your networking skills and contacts.
  • Ideas for enhancing your job search—The job search process is constantly evolving. Learn how to conduct an effective 21st-century job search.

About the facilitator

April McHugh, M.S., is a career and educational counselor and has been working with adults in career transition for more than 17 years.  In addition to facilitating JSSG, she provides individual career counseling to adults seeking more rewarding careers, are in career transition, and/or are considering additional education.  She also facilitates career planning workshops and presents on various career development and job search topics. Tips for managing your job search

No matter what the circumstances, looking for a job is a challenge. These strategies can help you survive the search.

  • Make a plan—Develop a plan that addresses your financial concerns. Learn which, if any, unemployment benefits you may qualify for. By getting your finances in order, you can then focus on potential employers and create a strategy for networking.
  • Network—Studies show that networking is the most fruitful job search tactic. Talk to friends, family, and former business contacts and let them know you’re looking. Ask for ideas and new contacts at the companies you’ve targeted. Many job seekers find networking rather daunting but there are many resources available to help you become a pro. Start by checking out articles online at www.quintcareers.com/.
  • Take care of yourself—Unemployment is stressful. Avoid isolating yourself by scheduling time out of the house daily.  Surround yourself with supportive people and engage in positive activities including exercise and healthy eating. Strive to maintain an upbeat attitude and seek resources to help you manage your stress and your job search. For additional information, see our website at www.dcs.wisc.edu/advising.

Miscellaneous: Be prepared for fluctuating temperatures in the meeting room. A sweater or jacket may be desirable. Coffee and tea are provided. You are welcome to bring your own mug.
